Old News #1

Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, US, 29 June - 11 Sep 2005

The main thrust of Old News is to showcase news items selected and commented on by artists. These news items tend to be culled from the print media, but there is no fixed rule saying that they must be. Basically, then, there are no dogmas. Guidelines are given, which change slightly from year to year, but it is essentially up to the artists to interpret them in each instance. Sometimes the artists follow the guidelines provided, sometimes not.
In Old News #1 (2004) and Old News #2 (2005), the guidelines for the invited artists were straightforward: the remit was simply to select and cut out articles that were regarded as interesting and send them with their comments. However, the timeframe and number of articles solicited varied from year to year. For Old News #1, 24 artists or artist groups were asked to cut out 4 articles each during 1 month – their comments were then printed on the front and back covers of the newspaper, separately from the actual articles.
